The Secret Diary by Martha Kirkland
Who'd ever think of poetry as inspiring murder & mayhem? Somehow, I tend to think of poets as kind, gentle souls. Not so in this story--at least for one poet.
Olivia Mallory is in London to see about getting a volume of her aunt's poetry published, but the publisher wants to also publish the poems of the man her aunt had written them to. ( Yes, I know, that's a terrible sentence. It's late at night, I'm late with writing this--that's my excuse. ) So she sets out to find this mystery man.
Meanwhile, David Crighton, former British spy, is in London to see about some threatening letters & deliveries to his uncle Denholm. And perhaps to find a mistress.
They join forces, and fall in love. Olivia has a few rough moments when she thinks that David might be the man who'd corresponded so passionately with her aunt.
When an attempt is made on her life, Olivia realizes that more is at stake than just a few poems.
I really enjoyed the mystery in this one, tucked in among the Regency romance like a special treat. I always like mixing genres. Someday, somebody's going to write a suspense gothic time travel mystery futuristic horror western fantasy romance, and I'll never have to buy another book.
