Promise Him Anything
Carla Cassidy
Excerpt
Nowhere to Run She wasn’t what Nick expected, although he didn’t know
exactly what he’d expected. He sensed no fear, as if
Juliette had long ago moved past such a base, primal
emotion.
“I thought my son and I were safe.” Her voice was barely
audible. Nick leaned toward her slightly. “It’s been over
three months. I thought David had found somebody else…moved
on…forgotten us.” A small bitter laugh escaped her, riding
the breeze and disappearing instantly. “I should have known
he was just biding his time, waiting for us to feel safe.”
“But you’re using your maiden name in town. That makes you
easy to find.”
Juliette frowned. “I tried using a fake name for a while,
but it was impossible to find jobs without a social
security number.”
She turned back to look at Nick, her gaze holding a steely
strength. “I refuse to give my son a different name each
day of the week. Besides, I’m not a criminal and I don’t
know how to live outside the law…”
