Hearts Afire
Helena’s heart turned over at the sadness in his voice—
the privations Major Brett Stanford must have made were
unimaginable.
“But at least you have lived,” she said. It was a simple
statement, quietly made, but he suddenly understood the
frustration she must have been battling her entire life.
What would he have done in her position? Gone mad, very
likely. He rose, still holding her hand, pulled her up to
face him, and replied, “You too are living now.”
The look in his eyes made her heart pound. His touch
made her skin tingle.
Brett’s other hand slowly traced the curve of her cheek
and then gently cupped her chin. His lips touched hers
gently, caressingly, then firmly as his arms slid around
her waist and pulled her to him.
Helena’s entire body seemed to burst into flame—like the
blaze they had just witnessed. Yet, as unnerving as it was,
it was also more exhilarating than anything she had ever
experienced. He was right: she was alive, at last…
