Are You Afraid?
Carla Cassidy
Excerpt
Enraptured and Enraged There was a gasp, barely audible
but there nevertheless. That faint, almost nothing sound
shivered through him, momentarily stilling the rage.
He punched the stop button and hit
rewind, then played it again.
Gasp.
Over and over again he played and
replayed, listening to her voice, relishing that gasp.
She’d been afraid. He relished her fear. He wanted her to
spend the rest of her numbered days in horror.
The rage returned without warning,
red sheets falling in front of his eyes, the scent of rich
dark earth filling his head. With a roar he shoved the tape
recorder off the table. It hit the floor and the plastic
casing shattered.
It was her fault that the ritual
hadn’t been completed. She was the one who had ruined
everything. She was the missing piece. She was the one who
had made everything change.
She was the one who had gotten
away.
